The Lindahl Lodge company - portfolio of projects
Reclaimed timber, aged and seasoned timber is used in our varied projects

A Woodman's cabin, an art studio, a meditation hut, a cosy hideaway or a spare bedroom...
...what space have you been dreaming of?

Having worked in a broad array of environments, on equally varied projects, we consider ourselves to be flexible and versatile in our ability to adapt to new challenges. From working on boats, renovating old showman's wagons; to building cabins, summerhouses or small extensions; our work is highly skilled and wonderfully contrasted. As the designers and builders of your desired environment, we welcome any ideas or specific needs that we can incorporate into the design, then apply to your structure.

Much of the timber we use is FSC (Forestry Strewardship Council) certified, or PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forestry Certification), ensuring that no irresponsibly managed forest finds its trees used in our work. The rest is reclaimed timber, from buildings in the process of demolition as well as other sources. If you have any timber that you no longer need, and it is in good condition, please call us as we would be happy to take it off your hands and put it to good use.

Aged timber is seasoned timber and therefore stronger and more offen than not, has a tighter grain having been naturally grown, making it stronger still. Aged timber also has a far more characteristic appearence, and if used the right way can last far longer than the average new build houses of today.

SUMMER HOUSES, SHEDS & CABINS

"Modern Life is full of competition of space in cramped housing. Man is a territorial animal and cramping will always give rise to irritation. The garden shed could be the salvation of modern marriage." Philip Hodson, Psychologist [The Times, April 8th 2004]

Sheds or cabins, just by their very nature, are simple in their form and structure. Perhaps this is one of the reasons they are used as retreats or workplaces by inventors, writers and even rulers; as if simplicity in the surrounding environment allows for mental clarity.

Whether it is a beach shack, treehouse, a towable caravan, a garden shed, an art studio on stilts or a small holiday retreat on the water's edge, each structure desires its own quirky individuality; its own soul.

Queen Victoria's shed or 'sun house', at Osborne House, in which she would read state papers, could be turned on its own axis so that it caught the maximum amount of sun. Abraham Lincoln was born in a log cabin. Walt Disney started drawing cartoons in his garden shed; Louis Renault assembled his first gearbox in his; Trevor Baylis invented the clock radio; Gilbert O'Sullivan composed his first songs; Roald Dahl penned his children's books; and Dylan Thomas produced some of his major works, all in the equivalent to a garden shed.

TREE HOUSES

Tree houses have been used since Roman times in different societies for thousands of years. They used to be the ultimate in safe housing as there was no safer place to shelter than high above any predators, amongst the trees.

As with most things, when necessity is removed, it falls into the domain of luxury or pleasure. Now that we no longer need to think of survival when homing ourselves, the tree house is chosen for its escapism qualities. It is a fun and adventurous alternative to a garden shed or even an extension, and is one of the few constructions that actually helps us get closer to our natural environment.

Tree houses have more recently gone to much the other end of the scale in terms of their usage. Instead of being a family home amongst the branches, they have more widely become viewed as playhouses for children.

This has helped the tree house in its journey through evolution as it is no longer tied to either usage, but can be used for whatever, however the owner sees fit.

Each tree is unique and so too is the tree house that fits into it. Every tree house is custom made to suit the client and also to take into consideration the needs of the tree's future growth and survival.  We have now developed techniques that allow us to build treehouses without the need to make fixings into the tree, thus preserving the life and health of the tree and consequently extending the life of the cabin that sits in it.

There are many exciting and inspiring features that can be added to your treehouse to enhance its surrounding environment and to help interact with its surrounding wildlife.   To see some of these features, please click here or if you’d like to discuss an idea that you have, for a possible treehouse or feature, please contact us to discuss it, as we’d be happy to help.
